A ‘New Deal’ to Securing Prosperity? Understanding Economic Policy Under President Moon Jae-in

Susan Thornton, Director of the NCAFP’s Forum on Asia-Pacific Security sits down with 2022 Emerging Leader and PhD scholar Chris Khatouki about his research that examines the geoeconomic angle of South Korea’s stake in the international rules-based order, undertaking an interrogation of the role that economic policy and geoeconomics statecraft have played in the ROK’s transformation of its domestic society.

Chris Khatouki is a PhD Scholar in Political Economy at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, where his research focuses on the contentious dynamics of economic transformation in East Asia. He currently holds a Graduate Fellowship with the Korea Foundation.

Since 2020, Chris has been an Associate at Asia Society Australia, Australia’s leading think tank on business and policy in Asia. In this role, Chris has helped with the delivery of national programmes and events across the business, policy, and diplomatic community. From 2018 to 2021, Chris also served on the Executive Council at the Australian Institute of International Affairs, NSW. Prior to this, Chris worked at the Gyeongsangnam-do Office of Education in South Korea.

He holds a First-Class Honours Degree in International Relations from the University of Wollongong, where he was awarded the University Medal. His writings on international affairs regularly feature on a number of global publications including the South China Morning Post, The Diplomat, Australian Outlook, and the Asia Society Policy Institute.
