The U.S.-ROK Alliance:
Transactional or Transformational?

The United States-Republic of Korea alliance is important for peace and stability in the region, but the relationship is plagued by deteriorating trust over various security issues. On July 21, 2020 the NCAFP held its first U.S.-ROK Strategic Dialogue via video teleconference to explore the opportunities and challenges for the alliance in the short to medium term, with former officials and prominent experts participating from both sides.
Participants provided their assessments and policy recommendations for a joint vision for the alliance based on two central questions:
- What are the top priorities for communication and resolution within the U.S.-ROK alliance?
- What are the top priorities for the U.S.-ROK alliance in maintaining regional peace and stability?
